Why Use Barcode Scanners

Why Use Barcode Scanners

Businesses that sell goods via a store will need to have the right equipment in order to successfully charge customers for their purchases. While it is essential to have a cash register it is also important to use barcode scanners as these can seriously speed up the purchasing process. When you are using these scanners in your business you will find that your employers on the cash registers are able to quickly scan items and charge the customer before moving onto the next. If you are thinking about introducing barcode scanners into your business here are some reasons why they are such a great idea.

-They can be inexpensive to buy, which is good news for smaller businesses who are looking to keep their costs down. The first scanners for barcodes that were introduced were quite expensive however today as technology has progressed it is easy to find scanners that are very reasonably priced.

-You can use them to keep a running total of how many items are purchased each day. This will assist you in terms of stock control which means that you will be able to save time when it comes to knowing how much new stock you need to purchase. They are also useful for seeing if any new line of products is selling well as all of the information can be quickly accessed at the touch of a button.

-They are easy to use. As the technology that is used in barcode scanners has been developed so much they are now so simple to operate. Simply slide the item that is being scanned under the scanner, with the barcode facing upwards and the scanner will do the rest.

-You can purchase portable or fixed scanners. The portable versions are great for doing spot checks on prices or for using away from the cash register for items that are quite large and which cannot fit through the fixed scanner. They are also very light and can be linked to your cash registers quickly and easily. The fixed scanners will work well at the cash register and having them in a fixed position is good for smaller items.

-If you own a warehouse a portable scanner can also be used to their in order to keep a total of your current stock inventory.

-Most of the barcode scanners that are around today are able to scan items from any angle which gives anyone who is using them even more convenience.

-It is possible to program these scanners so that they can read practically every kind of code that is available. With this in mind it is easy to integrate them into your existing business with the minimum of effort and fuss.

-When you are using barcode scanners you will find that your pricing is more accurate as all items will be listed at their correct price. This can often be a problem when people are using the old-fashioned method of entering a price manually.

Various IT Tools For Retail Management Like Barcode Scanners And Receipt Printers

Inventory and Cash Management are very important parts of any retail chain management and proper inventory and cash management helps retail businesses to reach global competency levels. Businesses having large amount and varieties of inputs as inventory may find it difficult to manually manage all the inventory. In earlier time all the inventory used to be maintained on registers and any inventory status related information can not be prepared instantly. Modern retail chains can not afford that delay as most of retail chains now operate real time supply chain management. Use of modern information technology tools, like Barcode Scanners, Label Printer, Receipt Printers and Cash Drawer, to maintain inventory and cash is proven best method.

Use of bar codes have made inventory management and billing process fast and convenient. Also chances of error with bar codes are almost nil. Lets have a bird eyes view on the use of bar codes in inventory and cash management. Barcode is unique number normally having more then 10 digits with unique lines printed over a product. Normally bar code is printed over the product at manufacturer level but in case there is no barcode printed on the product one can use label printer to print one. A label printer is a computer printer that prints on self-adhesive label material and/or card-stock (tags). Some label printers with built-in keyboards and displays are also in market, for stand-alone use. Label printers have a wide variety of applications, including supply chain management, retail price marking, packaging labels, blood and laboratory specimen marking, and fixed assets management. There are many types of label printers in the market like Desktop label printers, Commercial label printers, Industrial label printers and Industrial portable label printers. After getting all the products barcoded in your store next step is to register all the required information in the system like bar code range for a particular product, Prices of the products etc. Once done various POS (point of sale) software will do all the other tasks for you.

Once your customer has chosen all the products and he is ready for billing one needs to scan just the barcodes with the help of a barcode scanner. Barcode scanner is an electronic device for reading printed bar codes. Like a flatbed scanner, it consists of a light source, a lens and a light sensor translating optical impulses into electrical ones. Additionally, nearly all bar code readers contain decoder circuitry analyzing the barcode’s image data provided by the sensor and sending the barcode’s content to the scanner’s output port. Barcode scanner is quite fast device and it can scan thousands of product in a day without a delay. Scanned data of products get matched with already available data and price and other information of the product gets in to invoice automatically.

After scanning barcode with the help of barcode scanner invoice can be prepared using pos software. Receipt printers are being widely used to print invoice data for customers record. Modern cash drawer comes with separate section for each denomination of the currency notes. Cash drawer have some special features like after printing of bill cash drawer automatically opens and once the transaction is done cash drawer gets locked automatically.

Normally Barcode Scanners, Thermal Receipt Printers, Zebra Label Printers and Cash Drawers are required for making your business inventory system more effective and speedy. The Epson TMT88 V Serial POS thermal printer is the latest addition to Epson’s industry-leading TM-T88 POS printer series.

Barcode Scanners Touch Us Each And Every Day

Barcode Scanners Touch Us Each And Every Day

These days just about every item you see is touched at some point by barcode technology. From the manufacturing line where products are assembled to the shelf at your favorite store, individual products pass through dozens of check points where they are scanned. When an item is shipped it is scanned, when it is rung up at a cash register, if it is returned to the merchant it is scanned. All along the supply chain some type of barcode scanner feeds information to a computer database that keeps track of the product. As important as this barcode scanner technology is you would think that we would know more about it. Most of us, however, give it very little thought. It is such a part of our everyday life now that we hardly even notice it.

The job of the barcode scanner is to read the codes that are imprinted on the black and white UPC (Universal Product Code) symbols that you see on just about every package and item that your purchase. They do this job quickly, accurately, and efficiently. Once the code is read it is fed electronically to a computer which matches up the number to an item number in a product database. In doing so a merchant can keep track of inventory, ring up a customer purchase, or count the number of items left in a warehouse. Bar codes are used on everything from mail to medicines.

Barcode readers use light technology to communicate and interpret the product code. Using the light, an optical signal is transmitted then converted into an electronic signal. It is the electronic signal that is sent to the computer. In the simplest barcode scanners the light is LED. More sophisticated systems use laser light to communicate the signal. Laser technology is the type used in the high speed grocery store barcode scanners and a good majority of the scanners we see in larger stores and warehouses. Scanners may be wired to a register or other device or wireless. In wireless systems the signal is communicated to a base station and transmitted to the computer.

Believe it or not barcode scanner technology has actually been around for quite some time. The first scanners began to show up in the 1970s. It was not until about 10 years later that the technology really caught on. This is when scanners began to be used for point of sale check out systems. In these days scanners were extremely expensive and not all items were coded. The technology was not always reliable and many merchants just couldn’t make the capital investment necessary to transition away from manual checkout.

During the 1980s the cost of barcode scanners began to go down and the accuracy improved. Today you would be hard pressed to find a store that doesn’t use some type of barcode scanning technology. Even the smallest Mom and Pop shop has at least a basic wand system. If you walk through a modern day warehouse you will find that the entire logistics system depends on the scanning system. These are typically wireless and hand held units allow the team to have complete mobility.

There is no question that barcode technology touches each and every one of us daily. Take a look around and you will see either a barcode or a scanner just about everywhere you go. Thanks to this technology we have more products, cheaper products, and we can buy them more easily than every before.

A barcode reader (barcode scanner), also called a price scanner or point-of-sale (POS) scanner, is a hand-held or stationary input device used to capture and read information contained in a bar code. A barcode reader consists of a scanner, a decoder (either built-in or external), and a cable used to connect the reader with a computer.

There are five basic kinds of barcode readers each with its own unique advantage. Those are Pen wands, Slot Scanners, Charge-Couple Device (CCD) Scanners, Image Scanners, and Laser Scanners.

A Pen Wand is a simple barcode reader which is known for its durability and low cost; does not contain any moving parts. It has to remain in direct contact with the bar code at a certain angle.

A Slot Scanner remains stationary and the item with the bar code on it is pulled by hand through the slot. Slot scanners are typically used to scan bar codes on identification cards.

A CCD Scanner often used in retail sales has a better read-range than the pen wand. A disadvantage of the CCD scanner is that it cannot read a bar code that is wider than its input face.

An Image Scanner, also called as Camera reader, uses a small video camera to capture the image of the bar code and then uses sophisticated digital image processing techniques to decode the bar code.

A Laser Scanner, either hand-held or stationary, does not have to be close to the bar code in order to do its job and can easily read a bar code up to 24 inches away. A laser scanning may perform up to 500 scans per second to reduce the possibility of errors.

Advantages of Barcodes: –
Barcode scanning systems provide an array of benefits, including operational efficiency, better customer service, and improved visibility of key business information to management.

A bar code label of twelve characters can be wanded in approximately the time it takes a keyboard operator to make two keystrokes.

Accuracy
For every 1,000 characters typed by a keyboard operator, there are an average of ten keying errors. For an Optical Character Reader (OCR), there is one error in every 10,000 reads. With wands, barcode systems approach one error in every 3,000,000 characters, and with laser technology, they approach one error in 70 million entries.

Data Integrity
When all the products or item data is Barcode scanned, it is free of human errors when data is entered. Barcode scanners works as a designed user interface that prevent the input of invalid data.

Probable number of substitution errors per 3,400,000 characters

Data Entry Meth — Errors

Keyboard Entry — 10,000
OCR Scanning — 300
Barcode scanning(Code 39) — 1

Ease of Implementation
Operators of bar code scanners can learn to use the equipment effectively in less than 15 minutes. System costs are lower than other means of data entry because of the existence of interfacing hardware and software.

Cost Effectiveness
Barcode systems have a demonstrated payback period of six to eighteen months, and they provide the highest level of reliability in a wide variety of data collection applications. Barcode systems create value not only by saving time, but also by preventing costly errors.

Information is the most valuable asset for any organization. Every organization should protect its operations data with reliable data management by ensuring data accuracy and availability. Barcode Scanners equipment helps firms in maintaining accurate supply chain and operations data management.

Here one point is mark able that it is because of barcodes that we are able to manage huge quantity of such materials only because of barcode and barcode scanners.

Normally at the manufacturers end barcodes are printed over the outer pack of any product and respective information can directly be send to the stores where particular inventory is moving therefore no requirement at the store end to label the product for the bar codes but in case there is no such barcode information on the product, tis can be done using label printers. When you need to label certain products for some important information like barcodes then the use of label printers is done. Let us understand the whole processes in one go.

When a customer come to POS for billing counter boy scans the barcode printed over the product with the help of a barcode scanner. These scanners send system the information about the product and then a command goes to receipt printer and that printer generates the bill for the purchase.
