IBM’s 100-year History Most Important Milestones

Big Blue” IBM has just celebrated its 100th birthday on June 16. The reputable Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company was established on 16 June 1911. This name was changed to International Business Machines or IBM in 1924. During IBM’s history, the company has developed from selling cutters and punch-clocks to laptops and supercomputers. In 2011, IBM was ranked the 2nd best global brand, the 12th most admired company in the world and the 3rd company for leaders and many other impressive titles.

The Big Blue employs over 425,000 employees in more than 200 countries around the world, with occupations including scientists, engineers, consultants, and sales professionals. Let’s see the most important milestones in the 100-year history of IBM through photos as follows:

The Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company was founded on June 16, 1911

In 1914, CTR recruited Thomas J. Watson from the National Cash Register Company to help lead the company. Watson led IBM from 1914 to 1956

Thirteen years later, the company’s name was changed to International Business Machines or IBM

Watson created the IBM Schoolhouse at Endicott in 1933 in order to train for employees

During the World War II, IBM and Harvard University built the world’s first computer called Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator ” or “Mark 1”

The 1957 delivery of the IBM 305 Random Access Method of Accounting and Control is known as the first computer disk storage system

IBM introduced the first floppy disk in 1971

In 1981, IBM introduced the first PC, the IBM 5150. IBM PC-5150 is the computer that caused the death of CP/M computers

In 1994, IBM engineers John King and John Nilsen created a system for ordering items using an electronic catalogue, paving the way for the trend of online shopping today with the success of e-commerce site Amazon.com

IBM developed its Blue Gene supercomputers in 2004

In 2008, IBM Roadrunner supercomputer was built. It is currently the world’s seventh fastest computer and the first TOP500 Linpack sustained 1.0 petaflops
